Can a Spirituality Be Separated from the Church That Bore It? “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” — Psalm 33:9 LXX For many years, I thought it was possible to receive a spiritual tradition primarily through its texts. I am less certain now. Books can open doors. They can place us in the presence of minds and hearts separated from us by centuries. They can introduce us to worlds we did not know existed. Sometimes a book arrives at precisely the right moment and alters the
