The Monastic Heart and the Future of the Church
Recovering the Inner Kingdom in an Age of Fragmentation

“Wherever there is a renewal of Christian life, there you will find the Desert Fathers.”
— Irénée Hausherr, S.J.
This conviction has quietly guided my life for many years.
Again and again I have found myself returning to the wisdom of the Desert Fathers and the great monastic tradition—not because they offer an escape from the world, but because they lead us to the place where every authentic renewal begins: the human heart transformed by the grace of Christ.
The monastic life is not first a place or even a vocation. It is the hidden work of allowing Christ to purify the heart through repentance, silence, humility, prayer, and love. It is there that the Kingdom of God is revealed, and from there that the life of the Church is continually renewed.
The Monastic Heart and the Future of the Church is an invitation to rediscover this living tradition. Drawing upon Scripture, the Desert Fathers, St. Isaac the Syrian, the Philokalia, and the witness of contemporary elders, it explores the inner kingdom to which every Christian is called.
My hope is that these pages will not simply inform the mind, but awaken a deeper desire for the hidden life with Christ—a life from which all authentic ministry, communion, and renewal spring.
Published by City a Desert Press, The Monastic Heart and the Future of the Church is available in paperback ($19.95), hardcover ($29.95), and ebook ($9.99) through Amazon, IngramSpark, and booksellers worldwide. Release Date: August 6, 2026
May this little book encourage those who long to breathe the same air as the fathers and to discover, with them, that the future of the Church is inseparable from the renewal of the heart.

Support the Work of City a Desert Press
City a Desert Press was founded with a simple purpose: to preserve, publish, and share the living wisdom of the Desert Fathers and the contemplative tradition of the Christian East for those who hunger for a deeper life in Christ.
Every book begins in silence.
Long before it reaches the hands of a reader, each manuscript is shaped through years of prayer, study, teaching, and reflection. Bringing that work into print, however, requires more than writing. Each volume must be carefully edited, professionally typeset, beautifully designed, and prepared for publication so that it may faithfully communicate the beauty of the tradition it seeks to serve.
If these books, retreats, podcasts, or study groups have nourished your own spiritual journey, I invite you to consider becoming a partner in this work.
Your generosity helps support the production of both current and future manuscripts, including the many unseen aspects of publication:
Professional editing and proofreading
Interior typesetting and page design
Cover design and artwork
Publishing and distribution costs
Reference materials and research
The preparation of future books still in progress
Every gift—whether large or small—becomes part of this quiet labor of preserving and transmitting the treasures of the Christian spiritual tradition for generations to come.
For the past several years, much of this work has been written during the hidden hours of caring for my elderly mother while continuing the ministry of Philokalia Ministries. It has become increasingly clear to me that these books belong not to one person, but to a much larger work of grace. They are offered in the hope that they may help others discover the beauty of the Gospel, the wisdom of the Fathers, and the transforming love of Christ.
If you would like to participate in that work, your support is received with deep gratitude.
May the Lord bless your generosity and reward your kindness a hundredfold.
