PHILOKALIA MINISTRIES

City a Desert Press is the publishing work of Philokalia Ministries, born from many years of prayer, retreat, spiritual formation, and sustained immersion in the wisdom of the Desert Fathers and the Philokalic tradition.

Its name expresses a conviction at the heart of this work: the desert is not merely a geographical place or a vanished moment in Christian history. The desert can be discovered wherever the human heart consents to silence, repentance, and the searching presence of God. Even in the midst of the modern city—in an age marked by noise, fragmentation, and spiritual restlessness—the heart may become a cell, and the cell a place of encounter.

The Press exists to offer writings rooted in this vision.

Its books seek neither novelty nor easy spiritual answers. They are written from within the slow work of prayer and the conviction that the wisdom of the Fathers remains profoundly necessary for the life of the Church. Drawing especially from the Desert Fathers, the Philokalia, St. Isaac the Syrian, and the wider ascetical and contemplative tradition of Christianity, City a Desert Press seeks to recover a language of the heart: desire, compunction, watchfulness, mercy, silence, wonder, and communion with God.

The writing itself often reflects the character of this tradition. These are books meant to be read slowly. At times they circle a mystery, return to an image, or remain with a question longer than the modern mind finds comfortable. Their purpose is not simply to communicate religious ideas, but to invite the reader to sit at the feet of the Fathers and, however imperfectly, to breathe the same air.

City a Desert Press carries out its work under the shelter of Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Monastery in Redwood Valley, California, and with the guidance and blessing of its Abbot. This relationship is not merely institutional. It reflects the deeper monastic spirit from which the Press desires to receive its orientation: hiddenness rather than self-promotion, obedience rather than ambition, and the patient handing on of what has first been received.

The long-term hope of City a Desert Press is to build a small and coherent library of spiritual writings that can serve those who hunger for the deeper tradition of Christian prayer. The Press seeks to preserve and share the fruits of the retreats, studies, and formation offered through Philokalia Ministries while allowing these works to reach readers far beyond the immediate community.

As the work develops, its desire is also to support the life and witness of the monastery and to place whatever fruit the Press may bear at the service of the Church.

City a Desert Press does not begin with a program for changing the world.

It begins with the heart.

​

With silence.

​

With the ancient conviction that when a human being enters the inner chamber and allows God to make of the heart a desert, even the city may become a place of encounter.
